Text:

Lord Halifax instructs me to communicate the enclosed text of a telegram which he has sent to Berlin and to Warsaw to support yesterday’s Appeal of the Holy Father.

Enclosure:

Telegram addressed to His Majesty’s Ambassadors at Berlin and Warsaw by His Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at midnight 31 August-1 September 1939.

His Majesty’s Government have been informed of the Pope’s appeal to your Government to do all that is in their power to avoid any incident and to abstain from taking any step that might aggravate the present tension.  His Majesty’s Government desire to support this appeal; with all the earnestness at their command.
